Course Overview
Dealing with an emergency
As the first responder on the scene of an emergency, it is crucial to assess the situation quickly and calmly, ensuring the safety of yourself and those around you. Prioritise any immediate life-threatening issues and begin providing immediate assistance as needed while waiting for additional support to arrive.
Primary Survey.
In an emergency situation, conducting a primary survey is crucial to quickly assess and address any life-threatening injuries or conditions. This typically involves checking the individual's airway, breathing, and circulation, as well as assessing their level of consciousness.
Basic Life Support.
Basic life support (BLS) with an automated external defibrillator (AED) is crucial in emergency situations where someone's heart has stopped beating. BLS involves providing chest compressions and rescue breaths to maintain circulation, while an AED is used to deliver electric shocks if necessary to restore normal heart rhythm.
Unconsciousness
Unconsciousness is often mistaken for cardiac arrest and can be caused by various factors, such as head trauma, lack of oxygen, severe dehydration, intake of drugs or alcohol, certain medical conditions like diabetes or seizures, and neurological disorders.
Bleeding Control
If there is severe blood loss, it is vital that it is brought under control as quickly as possible to prevent an individual from bleeding out.
On the course you will learn simple skills to control bleeding plus get hands experience using dressings, haemostatic gauze, chest seals and tourniquets.
GoodSAM Responder
The course is an assessed course and on successful completion you will receive a certificate that will enable you to apply to become a GoodSAM responder.
As a GoodSAM responder, you will have the important role of being alerted to incidents of local cardiac arrest and quickly providing assistance to help those in need. Your quick response and ability to perform life-saving techniques such as CPR could make a significant difference in the outcome for individuals within the community experiencing a cardiac emergency.
Learn from a Paramedic.
